I can see clearly now

When I'm preparing for a swim, I imagine absolutely everything about it: the colour of the water, how cold it is, the taste of salt in my mouth.  I visualise each and every stroke.

Public speaking is for most people, something to be avoided.

In fact, statistically, 9 out of 10 people are terrified of doing it and before you say 'But I don't speak in public', what I mean by this is any instance where you need to communicate to a group of people.

  • A webcam broadcast
  • A team meeting
  • An in-house presentation
  • A sales pitch
  • A full-on presentation of a speech in a commercial situation
  • A social scenario (weddings/birthdays/funerals etc).

As often as not, the challenge of speaking out in an informal team meeting is just as much of a challenge for many.

It is estimated that the majority of people have something to say, whether in a meeting or a more formal scenario and they don't say anything.

What makes it worse is that in today's information age, where the internet has enabled anyone to connect to large groups of people online, maximising your impact means that it's no long just about the face-to-face stuff.

Everyone looking to promote an idea, a product or an opinion will know that one of the most effective ways to get these ideas out there to lots of people is via a webcam.  But even that is still presenting which means that it is scary.

Statistically again, we know that lots of people try and get around this by promoting their ideas via blogs and slide webinars, cutting out the 'nasty bit' of having to appear themselves.

The real challenge here though, is that most of these fears are groundless and don't actually have basis in fact.  They are merely limiting beliefs that people have decided are true for them and therefore allow themselves to be governed by.

But speaking out to your audience, whether online or face to face, is the most powerful way to build trust, likeability and credibility.

So, to make the transition to speaking easier, one of the best pieces of advice that I can ever give you, is to change the emotional connection by imagining that you are chatting to friends.

Imagining - or visualisation - a social scenario such as over Sunday lunch or in your favourite pub will help even more.  The clearer you see it, the easier the experience.

The reason?

The idea behind visualisation - in other words, seeing a successful outcome in your mind's eye before it even happens is that the brain cannot tell the difference between what is real and what is vividly imagined.

In other words, if you imagine a successful outcome really clearly and vividly in your mind, the brain thinks it is really happening, so when you actually get to go through the experience itself, the brain has made sure that as much potential as possible is showing up, because, it knows what success looks like already.

Visualisation is not rocket science - it is a very simple process and the process by which we think moment to moment.

Just try this for a second - close your eyes and imagine your front door.

Done it?  You have successfully visualised!

Now whilst visualisation has become a well-respected and proven peak performance strategy in sports for some time, it is finally receiving the growing recognition and therefore traction in business sectors, for the simple reason that if your visualise a successful outcome, far more of that potential will show up.

Human beings imagine things in pictures.  The movies we play in our minds have a gigantic effect on how we feel about something.

The challenge is that most of us play our inner movies:

a) unconsciously and b) the wrong way round.

In other words, we play the disaster movie in our heads - all the things that an go wrong, are going wrong!

Solution

So, there is a simple solution and that is to consciously get into the habit of playing helpful movies in our minds of us succeeding.

There is huge evidence to suggest that living the future now or 'acting as if' is a very powerful means of engaging the brain and settling your brains natural focus towards your goal and achieving it.

Just to reiterate; whatever your goal may be, the key here is to visualise your achieving it so clearly that it appears real.  With clear imagination and visualisation, come the same beliefs, emotions and behaviours that will drive you towards the outcome you want.
